Himachal Pradesh University signs MoU with IIT Roorkee and CSIR-CBRI to strengthen disaster risk reduction, AI technologies, green energy, and Himalayan ecosystem research.
HPU Signs Landmark MoU with IIT Roorkee and CSIR-CBRI
Himachal Pradesh University (HPU), Shimla, will collaborate with the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee and CSIR–Central Building Research Institute for Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience (DRRR), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Green Energy, AI-driven technologies, and interdisciplinary research relevant to the Himalayan region and other fragile mountain ecosystems. The institutes signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aiming to strengthen high-impact research, academic excellence, and institutional collaboration.
Prof. Mahavir Singh, Vice-Chancellor of HPU Shimla, formally signed the MoU with Prof. K.K. Pant, Director of IIT Roorkee, and Prof. Pradeep Kumar Ramancharla, Director of CSIR–CBRI Roorkee at the institute today. This partnership marks a significant development in advancing research capabilities for mountain regions and disaster-prone areas.
Collaboration Establishes Robust Academic and Research Framework
Prof. Singh said that the collaborations will establish a robust framework for academic and research integration between the institutions through faculty exchange, student mobility, semester exchange programmes, joint supervision of research scholars, collaborative R&D projects, internships, and multidisciplinary consultancy initiatives. The MoU will also facilitate access for HPU students, researchers, and faculty members to state-of-the-art laboratories, advanced scientific instrumentation, specialised testing facilities, computational infrastructure, simulation platforms, and advanced engineering and analytical software available at IIT Roorkee and CSIR–CBRI.
The VC further said that the partnerships will significantly strengthen the newly established R&D Centres at HPU, particularly the Himalayan Centre for Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience (HIM-DR³), established as a nodal R&D Centre for Himachal Pradesh. This centre will serve as the primary hub for disaster research and resilience building in the state.
IIT Roorkee Commits to “Hub and Spoke” Research Framework
Prof. K.K. Pant, Director of IIT Roorkee, emphasized IIT Roorkee’s commitment towards strengthening the research and innovation ecosystem at HPU through a collaborative “Hub and Spoke” framework. He highlighted enhanced academic cooperation, joint research initiatives, faculty and student exchange programmes, access to advanced facilities, and mentorship support for developing high-quality research capabilities and interdisciplinary innovation platforms at HPU.
The Hub and Spoke model positions IIT Roorkee as the central knowledge hub while HPU serves as a regional spoke focusing on Himalayan-specific challenges. This framework enables efficient knowledge transfer, resource sharing, and collaborative problem-solving for mountain ecosystem issues.
CSIR-CBRI Focuses on Himalayan Hazards and Climate-Resilient Strategies
Prof. Pradeep Kumar Ramancharla highlighted the importance of long-term technical collaboration for capacity building of HIM-DR³ and strengthening inter-institutional partnerships through joint projects focusing on Himalayan hazards, geotechnical engineering, advanced material testing, disaster mitigation technologies, and climate-resilient strategies for mountain regions.
CSIR-CBRI brings decades of expertise in building research, structural engineering, and disaster mitigation to the partnership. The institute will support HPU in developing advanced testing capabilities and building resilient infrastructure capable withstanding earthquakes, landslides, and other Himalayan hazards.
HPU Delegation Visits Advanced Research Facilities
The HPU delegation, led by the VC, visited the state-of-the-art testing laboratories, advanced research infrastructure, and specialised facilities at the institutes to explore future collaborative initiatives in research, technology development, innovation, and skill enhancement. The visit allowed HPU faculty and researchers to assess the capabilities available for joint projects and understand how they can leverage IIT Roorkee and CSIR-CBRI resources.
During the visit, the delegation examined seismic testing facilities, material science laboratories, geotechnical engineering centers, and AI-driven simulation platforms that will support joint research initiatives. This hands-on exposure helps both parties identify specific areas for collaboration and plan collaborative projects effectively.
Partnership Addresses Critical Himalayan Challenges
This collaboration addresses critical challenges facing the Himalayan region including frequent earthquakes, landslides, flash floods, glacier lake outburst floods, and climate-induced disasters. The partnership will develop AI-driven early warning systems, resilient building technologies, and sustainable development strategies tailored for mountain ecosystems.
The Himalayan Centre for Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience (HIM-DR³) will coordinate research activities, train professionals, and provide policy support to the Himachal Pradesh government. The centre will also serve as a model for other mountain states looking to establish similar disaster resilience frameworks.
Through this tripartite collaboration, HPU positions itself as a leading institution for Himalayan research while gaining access to world-class infrastructure and expertise. The partnership exemplifies how academic institutions can work together to address region-specific challenges while contributing to national priorities in disaster management and sustainable development.
