Bihar’s 47 government polytechnics will establish Centres of Excellence with IIT Patna’s support, offering modern technical education in AI, IoT, Robotics, 3D Printing, Drones, and Electric Vehicles.

IIT Patna Leads Polytechnic Modernisation in Bihar

Thanks to a recent initiative by the Bihar State Department of Science and Technology, all 47 government polytechnics – including women’s polytechnics – will soon deliver modern technical education by establishing Centres of Excellence (CoEs) with IIT Patna’s assistance.

Under the second phase of the ‘Saat Nischay’ programme, work on creating 33 CoEs across different polytechnics is already in progress. These Centres specialise in advanced subjects such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), Robotics, 3D Printing, Drone Technology, and Electric Vehicles. By providing instructors with structured training and equipping polytechnics with modern hardware and software capabilities, the government aims to drastically improve hands-on learning in these institutions.

CoEs as Innovation Hubs for Emerging Technologies

The mission of each CoE is to transform the host institution into an innovation hub in emerging technologies. Lokesh Kumar Singh, Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology, said the initiative will significantly help students and entrepreneurs by providing ideas, research, and development facilities to build an Atma Nirbhar Bharat.

The CoEs will enable polytechnics to shift from traditional curriculum-based teaching to project-driven, industry-aligned learning. Students will gain exposure to cutting-edge tools, lab infrastructure, and real-world problem-solving environments, preparing them for roles in advanced manufacturing, automation, and digital technologies.

Access to Advanced Labs and Specialised Curricula

Additional benefits of the CoE programme include access to advanced laboratory infrastructure, specialised course curricula in emerging technologies, and enhanced placement opportunities across core industries. Diploma students will learn using updated equipment, software tools, and simulation platforms that mirror industry standards.

Singh pointed out that, keeping industry needs in view, diploma courses in 26 new disciplines are being imparted across different polytechnics in the state. These new courses align with the evolving demands of the manufacturing, automotive, energy, and technology sectors. Work on creating 33 CoEs in various polytechnics is progressing under the second phase of the ‘Saat Nischay’ programme.

Improved Placements and Industry Linkages

Placement scenarios have improved considerably, highlighting the success of these modernisation programmes. For instance, a major pooled placement drive conducted successfully with Maruti Suzuki India Limited resulted in job offers for 34 polytechnic students from districts such as Patna, Saran, and Gaya.

This outcome demonstrates how equipping polytechnics with modern infrastructure, updated curricula, and industry-aligned training directly enhances employability. Core industries are increasingly seeking diploma holders with hands-on experience in automation, robotics, electric vehicles, and digital systems – skills the CoEs are designed to instil.

Structured Instructor Training and Hands-On Learning

The CoE programme places strong emphasis on instructor training. Faculty members from polytechnics receive structured training from IIT Patna experts, enabling them to teach emerging technologies effectively. This capacity-building approach ensures that the benefits of the CoEs extend beyond infrastructure to pedagogy and classroom delivery.

By combining modern hardware, software capabilities, and trained instructors, the programme creates a robust ecosystem for practical, skill-oriented education. Students engage in projects, workshops, and internships that mirror industry workflows, bridging the gap between academic learning and professional requirements.

Building Atma Nirbhar Bharat Through Diploma Education

The initiative aligns with the national vision of Atma Nirbhar Bharat by strengthening India’s diploma-level technical education ecosystem. By upgrading polytechnics into innovation hubs, Bihar is creating a pipeline of skilled talent capable of driving local manufacturing, startups, and technology adoption.

Entrepreneurs and small-scale industries in the state will also benefit from the research and development facilities offered by the CoEs. Students can prototype ideas, test technologies, and collaborate with industry partners, fostering a culture of innovation and self-reliance.

With IIT Patna’s technical guidance, the state government’s commitment, and the growing linkages with industry, Bihar’s polytechnics are poised to become key contributors to India’s technical workforce and innovation landscape.
