IIT Madras has established a pioneering Centre for Advanced Research on Spirituality, Science and Society, funded by Rs. 5 crore contribution from alumnus and spiritual leader Sant Rajinder Singh Ji Maharaj. The interdisciplinary hub will explore meditation’s scientific impacts, consciousness studies, and societal well-being, integrating science, humanities, medicine, and architecture to advance global research on human health and spiritual experiences.

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras has inaugurated the Sant Rajinder Singh Ji Maharaj Centre for Advanced Research on Spirituality, Science, and Society, marking a bold interdisciplinary venture at the crossroads of ancient wisdom and modern science. Spearheaded by a generous Rs. 5 crore endowment from IIT Madras alumnus Sant Rajinder Singh Ji Maharaj – a 1967 B.Tech Electrical Engineering graduate and global spiritual head of Science of Spirituality (Sawan Kirpal Ruhani Mission), which spans 3,400 centres across 50 countries – the centre aims to systematically investigate spirituality’s scientific dimensions and societal implications.

Launched on March 10, 2026, the event drew distinguished attendees including Sant Rajinder Singh Ji Maharaj and Mata Rita, Science of Spirituality leadership, IIT Madras Director Prof. V. Kamakoti, Dean of Alumni and Corporate Relations Prof. Ashwin Mahalingam, Centre Professor-in-Charge and Head of Humanities and Social Sciences Prof. Rajesh Kumar, and Office of Institutional Advancement CEO Kaviraj Nair. The inauguration underscored IIT Madras’s holistic approach to education, blending technological excellence with inner development.

Prof. V. Kamakoti emphasised the centre’s timeliness: “At IIT Madras, student wellness and mental health have always been a priority. Meditation and a spiritually grounded way of life play an important role in ensuring the wholesome growth of a student’s mind, body, and soul. A centre dedicated to exploring the science of spirituality and its impact on society is therefore the need of the hour.” He expressed gratitude for Sant Rajinder Singh Ji Maharaj’s longstanding contributions, including Merit-cum-Means Scholarships, Chair Professorships, and the Heritage Centre.

Sant Rajinder Singh Ji Maharaj articulated the centre’s profound vision: “As global research continues to highlight the role of meditation in enhancing focus, efficiency, and overall well-being, it is important to recognise that its true purpose goes beyond measurable benefits. Meditation helps individuals understand their true selves, experience inner peace, and foster deeper harmony in their relationships with others.” His inaugural lecture, “Engineering Your Inner Peace,” captivated over 800 students, faculty, alumni, and public attendees at the IIT Madras Research Park auditorium, inspiring practical applications of spiritual principles.

The centre’s research agenda spans transformative themes: meditation’s effects on human health, physiological underpinnings of spiritual experiences, architecture’s role in spiritual spaces, medicine-spirituality intersections, and broader interdisciplinary inquiries. Prof. Rajesh Kumar highlighted its integration with Humanities and Social Sciences: “The Sant Rajinder Singh Ji Maharaj Centre is a unique addition… This centre will help us add personal and mental well-being to the core of technological innovations.” It aligns HS programmes with societal directions for scientific progress, embedding well-being into innovation.

Key activities include elective courses on meditation and spirituality, support for PhD and post-doctoral scholars, conferences, workshops, and a proposed mind-body-soul laboratory for teaching, research, and practice. These initiatives will promote public engagement, fostering dialogues between spirituality and science.

This centre positions IIT Madras as a trailblazer in consciousness studies, addressing global challenges like mental health crises amid technological acceleration. By rigorously examining meditation’s empirical benefits – such as stress reduction, cognitive enhancement, and emotional resilience – it bridges Eastern contemplative traditions with Western scientific methodologies. Potential outcomes include evidence-based protocols for student wellness, architectural designs optimising spiritual experiences, and medical interventions integrating mindfulness.

Sant Rajinder Singh Ji Maharaj’s legacy at IIT Madras exemplifies alumni impact, transforming personal success into institutional evolution. The centre not only honours his vision but catalyses a renaissance where engineers “engineer inner peace,” equipping future leaders with tools for balanced, purposeful lives. In an era prioritising mental health, IIT Madras’s initiative sets a benchmark for tech institutes worldwide, proving spirituality and science can harmoniously advance human potential and societal harmony.
