Over 1,000 pedal enthusiasts joined IIT Hyderabad’s ‘Sundays on Cycle’ under Fit India, flagged off by Pullela Gopichand, promoting cycling as campus lifestyle.

Over 1,000 participants joined the ‘Sundays on Cycle’ event at the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IIT Hyderabad), turning the campus and nearby roads into a vibrant cycling zone. The ride, organised under the Fit India Movement, promotes daily fitness, outdoor activity, and healthy living as core habits rather than occasional pursuits. The IITH Cycling Club designed and led the event, drawing students, faculty, staff, families, and local residents into a shared, active Sunday morning.

The event offered two cycling routes – 10 km and 20 km – both planned to be beginner‑friendly while still giving riders a moderate physical challenge. Cyclists started near the main campus entrance and moved through shaded lanes, service roads, and peripheral tracks, enjoying the open air and the sense of collective movement. The organisers also marked safe points, rest stations, and oversight teams to keep the rides smooth and secure.

Warm‑ups, Zumba, and community buzz

The event did not just focus on distance; it built a full‑day fitness experience around the rides. The Cycling Club kicked off the morning with structured warm‑up sessions and dynamic stretches, helping riders prepare their bodies and reduce the risk of injury. After the cycling segments, the venue shifted into a lively Zumba session, with instructors and music turning the open space into an energetic group workout.

Organisers added interactive community activities, including games, group photos, and informal conversations between students and faculty. Vegetable‑based and health‑focused refreshments encouraged mindful eating alongside physical activity. By blending rides, workouts, and social interaction, the event aimed to make fitness a natural, enjoyable part of campus culture.

Fit India on two wheels

Olympic‑medal‑winning coach and former badminton champion Pullela Gopichand flagged off the event as the chief guest. He used the occasion to stress how regular physical activity builds strength, discipline, and resilience over time.

Gopichand urged students to treat sports and exercise as a daily habit, not just an extra‑curricular add‑on. “Build a routine of physical activity early in life, and you carry that strength, focus, and self‑discipline into your career and personal life,” he said, encouraging students to see sports as a complement to academics, not a distraction from it.

Cycling as a campus lifestyle

Prof. B.S. Murty, Director of IIT Hyderabad, highlighted the Institute’s active push to make cycling and fitness routine elements of campus life. “We believe that fitness and well‑being are integral to education,” he said. “We encourage students to adopt cycling as a lifestyle, and we even help them buy a cycle at the time of admission so they can ride actively on campus.”

The Institute has been upgrading on‑campus cycling infrastructure, including designated tracks, secure parking, and lighting, to make cycling safer and more convenient. The goal is to reduce dependence on cars and scooters inside the campus and to make the bicycle the primary mode of transport for many students, especially freshers.

Prof. Murty also outlined plans to integrate sports and physical activity into the academic framework, through structured physical‑education modules, participation‑based incentives, and partnerships with external sports organisations. The aim is to ensure that every student, regardless of skill level, feels encouraged to stay active and engaged.

Building a recurring fitness movement

The organisers now plan to hold ‘Sundays on Cycle’ as a recurring event, with the Cycling Club aiming to involve nearby residential colonies, local schools, and municipal bodies in future editions. They also intend to introduce themed rides, such as women‑only sessions, night‑light rides, and long‑distance routes that connect towns and natural landscapes.

By turning a simple bike ride into a shared, celebratory experience, IIT Hyderabad is not only supporting the Fit India Mission but also proving that universities can become powerful hubs for public‑health‑driven mobility and fitness – one pedal‑power‑driven ride at a time.
