NTPC Ltd and IIT Bombay have drilled India’s first underground CO₂ storage evaluation well, boosting the nation’s carbon capture and storage (CCS) progress. This effort evaluates long-term CO₂ sequestration to cut greenhouse gas emissions. Launched in November 2022 under NITI Aayog’s oversight, it targets coal seams and sandstone formations to support India’s climate goals.
Research partnership drives geological assessment
NETRA, NTPC’s research wing, teamed up with IIT Bombay’s Department of Earth Sciences. Together, they created India’s inaugural geological storage atlas for methane-rich coalfields, laying groundwork for CCS rollout.
Drilling operations completed in Jharkhand
Work occurred at Pakri Barwadih in Jharkhand. The initial well, drilled in September 2025, hit 1,200 meters to analyze subsurface geology. A second well followed on December 21, 2025.
