IIT Delhi signed MoUs with 18 NITs launching ALIGN framework with Early Admission Scheme, enabling top NIT students to join MTech, MS, PhD without GATE.
IIT Delhi Partners with 18 NITs for Academic and Research Ecosystem
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi has signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with 18 National Institutes of Technology (NITs). The aim is to create an ecosystem for academic exchange, joint research, student mobility, and talent development in alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
The network launched at an event at IIT Delhi on June 4, 2026, in the presence of Saumya Gupta, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Education, Government of India, who joined virtually, along with NIT Directors and senior faculty of IIT Delhi. This landmark collaboration brings together India’s premier engineering institutions to strengthen academic linkages and foster innovation across the country.
18 Partner NITs Span Across India
The 18 partner institutions include NIT Tiruchirappalli, NIT Warangal, NIT Surathkal, NIT Calicut, NIT Rourkela, VNIT Nagpur, MNIT Jaipur, MNNIT Allahabad, MANIT Bhopal, SVNIT Surat, NIT Kurukshetra, NIT Silchar, NIT Jamshedpur, NIT Raipur, NIT Srinagar, NIT Meghalaya, NIT Sikkim, and NIT Jalandhar. These institutions represent NITs from across India, ensuring geographic diversity and equal opportunity for students from different regions.
The partnership creates a national network of engineering excellence, enabling students and faculty from all parts of the country to access IIT Delhi’s world-class resources and mentorship. This collaborative approach strengthens India’s higher education infrastructure while promoting unity through academic cooperation.
Early Admission Scheme Eliminates GATE Requirement for Top NIT Students
A major feature of the framework is the Early Admission Scheme, which enables high-performing NIT students to apply for MTech, MS (Research), and PhD programmes at IIT Delhi without qualifying through GATE or other national-level examinations, subject to prescribed academic and research performance criteria. This groundbreaking provision also removes a significant barrier for talented NIT students seeking advanced education at IIT Delhi.
Additionally, eligible undergraduate students from partner NITs can spend their final year at IIT Delhi as Special Exchange Students, undertaking advanced coursework and research projects under IIT Delhi faculty. This exchange opportunity exposes NIT students to cutting-edge research environments and prepares them for successful careers in academia and industry.
Credit Transfer and Sharing Reduces Time for Advanced Degrees
The collaboration also includes provisions for credit transfer, credit sharing, and advanced standing, enabling students to complete a portion of their academic requirements at IIT Delhi while earning credits recognised by both institutions – potentially reducing the time required to complete advanced degrees. Students can optimize their academic journey by leveraging courses and research opportunities at both institutions.
This flexible credit system acknowledges the quality of education at NITs while providing students access to IIT Delhi’s specialized courses and research facilities. The approach promotes efficient use of academic resources and accelerates talent development across India’s engineering education ecosystem.
ALIGN Framework Launches with Three Key Components
To operationalise the MoUs, IIT Delhi has launched ALIGN – Academic Linkages for Innovation and National Growth – consisting of three components: a Predoctoral Fellowship Scheme for students aspiring to pursue doctoral studies at IIT Delhi; a Research Seed Grant Scheme supporting collaborative research and faculty exchanges; and a Research Immersion Visit Scheme through which IIT Delhi faculty delegations will visit partner institutions to identify research opportunities.
The Predoctoral Fellowship Scheme provides financial support and mentorship for NIT students preparing for doctoral research at IIT Delhi. The Research Seed Grant Scheme also funds collaborative projects between IIT Delhi and NIT faculty, fostering interdisciplinary research and innovation. The Research Immersion Visit Scheme enables IIT Delhi professors to engage directly with NIT researchers, identifying synergies and establishing joint research initiatives.
Director Banerjee Highlights NEP 2020 Spirit
Prof Rangan Banerjee, Director of IIT Delhi, said: “The partnership between IIT Delhi and NITs symbolises the spirit of NEP 2020 and contributes to building a more interconnected and globally competitive higher education system.” The Director emphasized that this collaboration represents a transformative step toward realizing India’s vision of world-class higher education accessible to talented students across all regions.
The ALIGN framework positions IIT Delhi as a hub for national academic collaboration while elevating the research capabilities of partner NITs. This partnership model demonstrates how premier institutions can work together to strengthen India’s overall higher education quality and global competitiveness.
ALIGN Framework Strengthens India’s Higher Education Infrastructure
The IIT Delhi-NIT collaboration creates a sustainable model for academic and research partnerships that other institutions can replicate. By sharing resources, expertise, and opportunities, these institutions collectively enhance India’s capacity for innovation and technological advancement. The initiative also aligns with national priorities for building a skilled workforce capable of addressing India’s development challenges through science and technology.
