IIT Roorkee Pushing for all season tourism in Uttarakhand IIT Roorkee Pushing for all season tourism in Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand advances all-season tourism via infrastructure, rural empowerment, IIT Roorkee innovations, and local talents like Priyanka Khantwal breaking into South cinema.

All-Season Tourism: CM Dhami’s Bold Vision

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami envisions transforming the state into a year-round tourism powerhouse. Speaking on Sunday, he emphasized infrastructure upgrades -mbetter roads, digital connectivity, and accessibility – to capitalize on the Devbhoomi’s natural allure. The strategy prioritizes rural tourism, homestays, and religious circuits like Char Dham Yatra, empowering remote communities with jobs and sustainable livelihoods.

Results are evident. Winter footfall hit a record 1.5 lakh visitors, undeterred by snow. Enhanced heli-services, adventure sports, and eco-tourism packages ensure off-season vibrancy, positioning Uttarakhand as India’s adventure and wellness hub amid rising domestic travel post-pandemic.

IIT Roorkee’s Tech Revival for Heritage and Homestays

Complementing these efforts, IIT Roorkee is pioneering sustainable heritage restoration in Garhwal. Architect-scientist Namrata Kandwal, a Global Housing Technology Challenge winner, led the revival of a century-old cowshed in Faldakot, Pauri Garhwal. Using hempcrete panels – eco-friendly blocks from industrial hemp – the project created an earthquake-resistant structure assembled in just 10 hours.

Under her ‘Go-Hemp’ startup, this innovation counters Himalayan environmental threats like unregulated blasting for construction. Hempcrete offers insulation, fire resistance, and carbon sequestration, ideal for rural homestays aligning with CM Dhami’s tourism push. It promotes self-reliance, reducing reliance on cement while generating farmer income from hemp cultivation.

Priyanka Khantwal: Uttarakhand’s Tollywood Trailblazer

Amid this tourism surge, Uttarakhand’s talent shines globally. Priyanka Khantwal from Bandkhani, Pauri Garhwal – daughter of a retired Indian Air Force officer – exemplifies the hill state’s cultural export. A dance sensation from reality shows like Jodi Season 11, Dance India Dance: Champion Double Dose, and Dance Plus 5, she’s now debuting in Kannada cinema with Wild Tiger Safari.

Her bilingual track “Trendingg” is buzzing on social media, blending high-energy choreography with Uttarakhand’s folk influences. Priyanka’s journey from Garhwal’s valleys to Tollywood inspires youth, proving local roots fuel pan-Indian success in entertainment.

Synergies Driving Uttarakhand Forward

These stories converge: tourism infrastructure draws crowds, cultural ambassadors like Priyanka amplify the brand, and IIT’s tech solutions build resilient homestays. Together, they foster economic self-sufficiency in fragile ecosystems, blending tradition with modernity. Uttarakhand’s model could inspire other Himalayan states, balancing growth with conservation.
