Dr. S. Jaishankar, India’s External Affairs Minister, formally launched the IIT Madras Global Research Foundation, a pivotal initiative that aims to amplify the institute’s international collaborations, foster knowledge exchange, and promote cutting-edge research on a global scale.

Dr S. Jaishankar, India’s Minister of External Affairs, inaugurated the IIT Madras Global Research Foundation in Chennai today, a key initiative to boost the institute’s global ties with academia, industry, and governments. The foundation aims to establish IIT Madras as a leading international center for research excellence and cutting-edge innovation.


At the event, Dr Jaishankar observed the signing of several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) between IIT Madras and top partners from diverse nations. These pacts focus on joint research efforts, faculty and student exchanges, and collaborative projects that advance technology and science across international boundaries.

The launch aligned with IIT Madras’s vibrant Festival Fortnight, featuring the popular Shaastra and Saarang events. Dr Jaishankar joined the festivities, interacting with students and touring exhibits showcasing the institute’s prowess in engineering, technology, and research achievements.

In his reflections, the Minister expressed joy at connecting with IIT Madras’s dynamic young talent, praising their curiosity and passion for global issues. He stressed the vital role of grooming such minds to elevate India’s global standing.

This foundation highlights IIT Madras’s dedication to international partnerships, groundbreaking research, and alliances that fuel innovation and worldwide knowledge sharing.

Dr Jaishankar also participated in the Festival Fortnight’s interactive student session. “Always a pleasure to engage with our vibrant youth. Inspiring to witness their deep interest in international matters,” he posted separately on X.

He toured space startup Agnikul Cosmos on campus, commending the team: “Explored Agnikul Cosmos at IIT Madras. Deeply impressed by their skills and bold vision.” Per their site, Agnikul Cosmos builds orbital-class rockets, excelling in engineering, production, and software.

Post-event on X, Jaishankar shared: “Delighted to launch the IIT Madras Global Research Foundation, focused on expanding the institute’s worldwide presence. Witnessed MoU signings with key industry, academic, and government partners from various countries.”
