IIT ISM Dhanbad launches executive programme on electrical safety in mining operations

The Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad, has launched a five‑day Executive Development Programme (EDP) on “Electrical Safety in Mining Operations.” The course, organised by the Department of Electrical Engineering, brings together professionals from Coal India subsidiaries and other organisations to strengthen safety practices in the sector.

The Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad, recently launched a five‑day Executive Development Programme (EDP) on “Electrical Safety in Mining Operations.” The Department of Electrical Engineering at IIT ISM is conducting the programme, which has drawn 26 participants from various Coal India Limited subsidiaries and other mining and engineering organisations.

The programme was inaugurated by Swami Vedantinanda, a monk of the Ramakrishna Order and currently in charge of a polytechnic college and skill‑development centre at Ramakrishna Mission Shilpamandira, Belur Math. The inaugural session was presided over by Prof. Sukumar Mishra, Director of IIT ISM, who highlighted the crucial role of electrical safety, smart maintenance practices, and continuous professional development in ensuring safe, efficient, and sustainable mining operations.

Senior faculty members, including Prof. Keka Ojha, Dean of the Continuing Education Programme; Prof. Sukanta Das, Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering; Prof. Nitai Pal, Professor and Course In‑charge; and Prof. Pradip Kumar Sadhu, Professor (HAG) and Co‑Course In‑charge, also addressed the participants.

The EDP has been designed to tackle key electrical‑safety challenges in both underground and opencast mines. It covers preventive and smart maintenance of mining machinery, compliance with statutory safety regulations, and the application of emerging technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI) to improve mine safety outcomes. Through this executive programme, IIT ISM aims to equip industry professionals with advanced technical knowledge and practical strategies to reduce electrical hazards and enhance overall operational safety in the mining sector.
