A strategic partnership for maritime innovation

The Indian Navy has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology (BHU), Varanasi to strengthen collaboration in research, technology development and the indigenisation of advanced naval technologies. The agreement was signed at the Naval Headquarters in New Delhi by Vice Admiral B Sivakumar, AVSM, VSM, COM, Indian Navy, and Prof Rajesh Kumar, Dean (Research and Development), IIT (BHU), in the presence of senior officials from both organisations.

According to the Indian Navy, the partnership aims to bring together academic expertise and defence research to support the development of indigenous technologies for the country’s maritime sector. Under the agreement, the two institutions will work together on collaborative research projects, technology development, academic engagement, faculty and student interactions, and capacity-building initiatives.

Focus on indigenous naval technologies

The partnership is expected to create opportunities for students and researchers to work on projects related to advanced naval technologies. The Indian Navy said the collaboration aligns with the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat by promoting innovation and encouraging the development of home-grown defence technologies.

Officials said the MoU reflects the Navy’s continued efforts to strengthen partnerships with leading academic institutions across the country. By combining research capabilities with practical defence requirements, the collaboration aims to accelerate technological advancements and address future maritime security challenges.

The MoU will remain effective for three years and will support long-term research and development in various areas. Both institutions have expressed commitment to collaborative research and development, technical innovation, academic cooperation, faculty and student exchange and capacity building.

The partnership is expected to provide IIT (BHU) students and researchers with greater exposure to defence research while allowing the Indian Navy to leverage academic expertise in developing next-generation technologies. Faculty and student interactions will enable engineers to understand naval operational requirements, while Navy personnel can engage with cutting-edge research in areas such as materials, sensors, AI, robotics and systems engineering.

Alongside the research pact, IIT BHU Varanasi also opened a Heritage Park on campus. The institute launched its orientation program and a new Heritage Park, adding a cultural and historical dimension to its academic environment.

The Heritage Park aims to preserve and showcase the rich legacy of Banaras Hindu University and IIT BHU, highlighting contributions to science, engineering and national development. It will serve as a space for students, faculty and visitors to connect with the institution’s history while inspiring future innovation.

By combining a forward-looking research partnership with the Indian Navy and a celebration of its heritage, IIT BHU reinforces its dual identity as a centre of tradition and a hub of modern technology.

Broader context of IIT BHU’s collaborations

That agreement covers joint certificate programmes, executive education, Faculty Development Programmes, workshops, boot camps and technical competitions in emerging areas such as AI, ML, data science, robotics, IoT, cyber security, semiconductor technologies, smart manufacturing, Industry 4.0, additive manufacturing, digital engineering, quantum technologies, medical electronics, space technologies, drone technologies, smart cities, digital twin and high performance computing.
