IIT Guwahati and Airbus India Sign MoA for Global Training Center

In Assam, IIT Guwahati signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with Airbus India Private Limited in the presence of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma at IIT Guwahati campus today. Director of IIT Guwahati, Prof. Devendra Jalihal, and Suraj Chettri, Vice President of Airbus India, signed the memorandum to foster a formal alliance and a shared commitment to innovation, excellence, and the future of aerospace technology and development of logistics hub in Assam.

The signing ceremony took place at IIT Guwahati’s main auditorium, attended by institute officials, Airbus India representatives, government ministers, industry leaders, faculty members, and students. The event marked a historic collaboration between one of India’s premier technical institutions and the world’s leading aerospace manufacturer, positioning Assam as a significant player in the aviation and logistics sectors.

Chief Minister Highlights Skills Gap Address and Global Competitiveness

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Sarma said that the MoA besides addressing the current skills gap will ignite sustained growth and elevate the global competitiveness of the aviation and logistics sectors in the Northeast. He termed the collaboration as a significant step forward in creating a robust and dynamic workforce as well as boosting the aviation and logistics sector. He appreciated all the key stakeholders for their dedication and foresight in shaping a future where Assam can thrive as a hub of aviation industry innovation and excellence.

The Chief Minister emphasized that the training center will provide specialized aerospace education to students from Assam and neighboring Northeastern states, reducing the need for them to migrate to other parts of India for quality aviation training. This local availability of advanced aerospace education will strengthen the region’s talent pool and attract aviation companies to establish operations in Assam.

Training Center Will Offer Specialized Aerospace Programs

The global training center will offer specialized programs in aerospace engineering, aircraft maintenance, avionics systems, aerodynamics, flight simulation, and logistics management. The center will provide certification courses approved by international aviation authorities, ensuring that graduates meet global industry standards. Students will receive hands-on training using advanced simulators, aircraft components, and laboratory equipment supplied by Airbus India.

The curriculum will combine theoretical knowledge with practical skills, preparing students for careers in aircraft manufacturing, maintenance operations, airline operations, airport management, and logistics coordination. Airbus India will contribute technical expertise, industry best practices, and access to real-world aviation challenges, ensuring that training content remains current with evolving industry requirements.

Partnership Addresses Northeast Region’s Skills Gap

The collaboration directly addresses the current skills gap in the aviation and logistics sectors across the Northeast region. Currently, the region lacks specialized training facilities for aerospace professionals, forcing employers to recruit talent from other parts of India. The new training center will create a local pipeline of skilled professionals, reducing recruitment costs for aviation companies and improving workforce availability.

The center will also offer upskilling programs for existing aviation and logistics professionals, helping them upgrade their skills to meet emerging technology requirements. This continuous learning approach ensures that the region’s workforce remains competitive despite rapid technological advancements in aerospace and logistics industries.

Assam Positioned as Aviation Industry Innovation Hub

Chief Minister Sarma appreciated all the key stakeholders for their dedication and foresight in shaping a future where Assam can thrive as a hub of aviation industry innovation and excellence. The training center represents a cornerstone initiative in Assam’s broader strategy to develop aviation infrastructure, including airport modernization, new airport construction, and logistics park development.

With IIT Guwahati’s researchcapabilities and Airbus India’s industry leadership, the center will foster innovation in aerospace technologies, including sustainable aviation fuels, electric aircraft systems, and autonomous flight technologies. Research projects at the center will address challenges specific to Northeast India’s geography and climate, developing solutions applicable to similar regions worldwide.

Joint Commitment to Innovation and Excellence

Director Prof. Devendra Jalihal and Airbus India Vice President Suraj Chettri emphasized their formal alliance and shared commitment to innovation, excellence, and the future of aerospace technology. The partnership establishes governance structures including joint steering committees, regular review meetings, and performance metrics to ensure the training center achieves its objectives.

Both organizations committed resources including funding, faculty members, technical equipment, and industry mentorship to support the center’s operations. IIT Guwahati will provide academic infrastructure, administrative support, and student enrollment, while Airbus India will contribute industry expertise, training materials, and placement opportunities for graduates.

Logistics Hub Development Supports Regional Economic Growth

The memorandum specifically mentions the development of a logistics hub in Assam, recognizing aviation’s critical role in enabling efficient cargo movement and supply chain optimization. The training center will include logistics management programs covering warehouse operations, cargo handling, freight forwarding, and supply chain analytics.

As Assam develops its logistics infrastructure, including cold storage facilities, distribution centers, and multimodal transport networks, the trained professionals from this center will manage operations and ensure efficiency. The logistics hub will connect Northeast India’s agricultural products, handicrafts, and natural resources to domestic and international markets, boosting regional economic growth.

Student and Industry Benefits from Collaboration

Students benefit from the collaboration through access to world-class training facilities, industry-certified courses, internship opportunities at Airbus facilities, and direct placement pathways with aviation companies. The training center will create employment opportunities for hundreds of students annually, contributing to the region’s economic development and reducing unemployment rates.

Industry partners benefit from access to a skilled workforce trained to their specific requirements, reduced recruitment and training costs, and the ability to shape curriculum development to match evolving technology needs. The center will serve as a testing ground for new aviation technologies, allowing companies to evaluate innovations before commercial deployment.

The IIT Guwahati–Airbus India collaboration establishes a transformative foundation for aerospace education and logistics development in Northeast India, positioning Assam as a competitive aviation hub while addressing critical skills gaps and fostering innovation in aerospace technology.
