Assam seeks IIT Guwahati’s expertise to tackle riverbank erosion, while Odisha faces crop losses, rising vegetable prices, and fresh central assistance after severe monsoon flooding.
Assam looks for a lasting solution
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that the state government will engage experts from the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati to develop sustainable solutions to riverbank erosion. He made the announcement during a four-day tour of flood-hit districts in Upper Assam, where widespread flooding and erosion have damaged homes, farmland and public infrastructure.
After visiting an erosion-affected site at Chabua in Dibrugarh district, Sarma said government teams were already addressing the immediate damage but needed expert support to find a lasting solution. He also promised “appropriate compensation” for people affected by the floods and directed officials to identify families facing repeated displacement.
The decision reflects the scale and persistence of Assam’s erosion crisis. The state has lost more than 4.27 lakh hectares of land to the Brahmaputra, Barak and their tributaries since 1950. That loss represents about 7.40% of Assam’s geographical area. On average, rivers erode nearly 8,000 hectares of land every year, displacing thousands of residents and destroying agricultural livelihoods.
Erosion threatens homes and livelihoods
Riverbank erosion creates a different kind of disaster from temporary flooding. While floodwaters may recede after several days, erosion permanently removes land, homes, roads and community infrastructure. Families often cannot return to their original villages because the river has physically altered or swallowed the land on which their homes stood.
During his visit, one erosion-affected woman told the Chief Minister that her family had rebuilt its home eight times, only to see the river wash it away repeatedly. Sarma said that this cycle could not continue and instructed officials to work towards the safe and permanent rehabilitation of such vulnerable families.
He also shared an aerial photograph of an erosion-hit area on social media and described erosion as one of Assam’s greatest geographical challenges. The government plans to use modern technology to strengthen riverbanks, improve risk mapping and identify locations that require urgent intervention.
IIT Guwahati could contribute expertise in river engineering, hydrology, geospatial analysis, remote sensing and climate-resilient infrastructure. Researchers may assess river morphology, sediment movement, bank stability and the impact of embankments before recommending site-specific measures. Such scientific analysis can help authorities move beyond short-term repairs and design interventions suited to Assam’s changing river systems.
Flood situation remains severe
The current flood wave has severely affected Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat and Golaghat districts. The floods had claimed 85 lives by Saturday, while several areas in Sivasagar and Charaideo remained inundated after floodwaters entered on July 19.
Sarma said he would visit other affected areas after Dibrugarh to review relief operations and prepare a comprehensive assessment for compensation. Residents, however, have called for long-term measures, arguing that relief and reconstruction efforts will repeatedly go to waste unless authorities address the underlying causes of flooding and erosion.
A sustainable strategy may combine riverbank protection with catchment treatment, wetland conservation, improved drainage and planned relocation from high-risk zones. Engineers may use vegetation-based stabilisation, geotextiles, retaining structures and carefully designed spurs where appropriate. No single method can protect every stretch of riverbank because the Brahmaputra and its tributaries change course, sediment load and flow intensity across seasons.
Odisha faces food-price pressure
Flood damage has also affected household budgets in coastal Odisha. Incessant rain, waterlogging and disruptions to harvesting and transport have reduced the supply of vegetables in several areas. Farmers have reported substantial crop losses, with some fields suffering complete destruction.
Retail prices have risen sharply. Brinjal, okra, pointed gourd, bitter gourd, ridge gourd and other vegetables are selling at around ₹100–₹120 per kilogram in many markets. Green chillies have reached approximately ₹200 per kilogram. These price increases show how floods affect families beyond the directly inundated areas. Even households that escape water damage can face higher food costs when production, transport and market access break down.
The Odisha government has begun focusing on restoring infrastructure damaged by the floods. Roads, drainage networks, irrigation facilities and local market connections will require repairs before agricultural activity can return to normal. Authorities will also need to assess crop losses and support farmers whose fields remained waterlogged or lost harvests.
Central assistance for flood-hit states
The Centre has approved an advance release of ₹500 crore for Odisha under the State Disaster Response Fund. The amount forms part of a ₹2,117.85 crore allocation for seven flood-affected states. The assistance will support relief, rescue, rehabilitation and the restoration of essential infrastructure.
The release can help Odisha respond quickly while conducting detailed damage assessments. However, long-term recovery will require more than immediate financial assistance. The state must restore damaged public assets, help farmers recover production and improve drainage and flood preparedness in vulnerable areas.
The situations in Assam and Odisha underline the growing need for disaster management that combines immediate relief with scientific planning. Assam’s proposed partnership with IIT Guwahati could provide a model for evidence-based riverbank protection. Odisha’s response will need to combine infrastructure repair, agricultural assistance and price management.
Both states face different risks, but they share a common challenge: recurring floods are becoming increasingly costly for communities, governments and local economies. Sustainable solutions will depend on accurate data, stronger infrastructure, coordinated institutions and policies that protect people before disasters strike.
