IIT Delhi’s IHFC partners with AMTZ MediValley to accelerate medical robotics, combining AI research with manufacturing, testing and validation to move innovations from laboratories into hospitals.
A strategic partnership for healthcare
The Innovation Hub Foundation for IoT and IoE (IHFC) at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with AIC-AMTZ MediValley to accelerate the development of medical robotics and intelligent healthcare technologies. The partnership brings together IHFC’s expertise in artificial intelligence, robotics, cyber-physical systems and autonomous technologies with the Andhra Pradesh MedTech Zone’s integrated manufacturing and innovation ecosystem.
The agreement aims to shorten the journey from research to clinical application. By combining advanced engineering with medical-device manufacturing, the partners will help innovators develop, test, validate and eventually deploy next-generation healthcare solutions in real-world settings. The collaboration could strengthen India’s capacity to build indigenous medical robots and reduce dependence on imported technologies.
From laboratory research to hospitals
Medical robotics requires more than a promising prototype. Developers must demonstrate safety, reliability, clinical usefulness and regulatory compliance before hospitals can adopt a system. Many innovations struggle to cross this gap because research teams lack access to specialised manufacturing facilities, clinical validation environments or industry networks.
The IHFC–AMTZ partnership seeks to address these barriers through a coordinated support system. Researchers and startups will be able to use AMTZ’s manufacturing infrastructure, regulatory expertise and industry connections while drawing on IHFC’s capabilities in AI, robotics and autonomous systems. This integrated approach can help teams refine their designs and prepare products for clinical evaluation.
The collaboration will focus on joint research, technology development, product validation and support for deep-tech startups. It will also encourage the development of healthcare technologies that can move beyond demonstrations and function reliably in hospitals, diagnostic centres and other care facilities.
Strengths of IHFC and AMTZ
IHFC serves as IIT Delhi’s Technology Innovation Hub and works in areas including medical technology, agriculture, industry and defence. Established with support from the Department of Science and Technology under the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems, the hub promotes research, entrepreneurship and technology translation. Its work in robotics, AI and cyber-physical systems provides a strong technical foundation for the partnership.
AMTZ, located in Visakhapatnam, has created a large medical-technology ecosystem that supports product development, manufacturing and innovation. AIC-AMTZ MediValley, the incubation arm of this ecosystem, supports life-science and medical-device startups through access to infrastructure, mentoring, prototyping, testing, funding and market support. The MediValley Atal Incubation Centre receives support from NITI Aayog under the Atal Innovation Mission.
Together, the institutions can offer innovators capabilities that are rarely available under one roof. A startup may begin with an algorithm or robotic mechanism at IHFC, develop a functional medical device through AMTZ facilities, test its performance and then prepare it for regulatory and commercial pathways.
Focus on medical robotics
Medical robots can support surgeons, doctors, nurses and patients across several applications. Surgical systems can improve precision and enable minimally invasive procedures, while rehabilitation robots can help patients recover mobility after injury or illness. Hospitals can also use robotic platforms for patient assistance, logistics, sterilisation and remote monitoring.
The partnership does not limit itself to one category of medical robotics. Its wider focus on intelligent healthcare technologies allows researchers to explore surgical systems, assistive devices, diagnostic platforms, rehabilitation technologies and autonomous hospital solutions. Such diversity can encourage collaboration between engineers, clinicians, biomedical researchers and entrepreneurs.
The partners can also use innovation challenges, hackathons and accelerator programmes to identify promising ideas. These programmes can help students, researchers and startups solve practical healthcare problems while receiving feedback from doctors, manufacturers and regulatory experts. A LinkedIn communication associated with the partnership said the collaboration aims to create a dedicated ecosystem for medical-robotics startups and facilitate access to incubation, testing, mentoring and manufacturing infrastructure.
Commitment to indigenous innovation
Dr Jitendra Sharma, Managing Director and Founder CEO of AMTZ, said India possesses the talent to lead the world in medical robotics but needs an ecosystem that transforms ideas into life-saving technologies. He described the partnership with IHFC as a step towards combining innovation, manufacturing and entrepreneurship to develop medical technologies in India for global use.
His comments reflect the larger objective of strengthening India’s MedTech capabilities. Domestic development can help lower costs, improve serviceability and create technologies suited to Indian hospitals and healthcare conditions. It can also support local manufacturing, generate skilled employment and create opportunities for Indian startups to enter global markets.
Wider significance for healthcare
The MoU comes at a time when hospitals are increasingly exploring automation, AI-assisted diagnosis and robotic support. However, healthcare institutions need technologies that demonstrate practical value rather than merely technical novelty. By emphasising validation and real-world deployment, the partnership places clinical relevance at the centre of innovation.
The agreement was signed in the presence of Prof Ajay Kumar Sood, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India. Ashutosh Dutt Sharma represented IHFC, while Dr Jitendra Sharma signed on behalf of AMTZ. Officials and representatives from the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser, the Vizag Science and Technology Cluster, IHFC and AMTZ attended the event.
Building a national MedTech pipeline
The IHFC–AMTZ collaboration can create a pipeline that links research, entrepreneurship, manufacturing and healthcare delivery. If the partners successfully support startups from concept to commercialisation, they could establish a model for developing affordable and globally competitive medical robots in India.
